REUNITED BY FATE after 40-year love affair

THE BURT REYNOLDS STORY

A true match made in heaven, as you read in the history of Smokey and the Bandit.

A very interesting story of fate comes full circle between Burt Reynolds and the ’77 Trans Am that started the phenomenon of the famous Bandit car.

In November 2016, The Burt Reynolds Foundation contacted me at my business, Trans Am Specialties, and asked me if I had a 1977 Trans Am to bring to the San Carlos Institute in Key West.

I was told that Burt Reynolds would be making an appearance at the institute for the documentary of the Smokey and the Bandit movie.

I just happened to have a very special Trans Am that was the Pontiac brochure car for the ’77 Bandit cars. I brought it to the institute and parked the car out front.

Burt Reynolds arrived at the San Carlos Institute and signed the original brochure that the car appeared in, and also signed Don Deluise’ personal helmet from the Cannonball Run movie.

Burt loved the fact that there was a “Bandit” car present for his documentary.

It was a very successful night, the Trans Am was featured on the front page of the Key West Citizen newspaper.

A few days later I received a call from the Burt Reynolds Foundation asking if I could confirm that this was the actual car that was on the Pontiac brochure that Burt signed, and I confirmed that it was.

They informed me that Burt Reynolds and Hal Needham had seen this car on the brochure, and in person, 40 years ago and that this was the very car that persuaded them to use the vehicle in Smokey and the Bandit. Burt could not believe that he was reunited with the car at the filming of the documentary. They went on to say that Burt was glad Pontiac did not let him have this car for the movie, since it would have been destroyed with the rest of the Trans Ams.

Burt invited us to the foundation and asked us to bring the Trans Am so that Burt could see the car again. He wanted to make a video documenting the connection between the original Bandit and Burt.

They stated that Burt was going to deem our ’77 Bandit promotional Trans Am as “The Official First-Born Bandit”, and if it were not for Hal and Burt seeing this car, the Bandit Trans Am would not have existed, and the car in the film might have been a Corvette or some other car.

Reunited by fate after 40 years – it’s a true miracle!

Astonishing Condition

Many would consider this Trans Am, the only one of its kind, to be in museum-quality condition. The car has just 44,000 original miles with only one, show-quality paint to restore its lustrous showroom glow. The original interior has been very well preserved, right down to the original, working factory radio. Sitting in the driver’s seat you can just about hear Jerry Reed singing Eastbound and Down.

The undercarriage still retains the original factory primer, and the rims, according to Smoke Signal magazine, are the original Kelsey Hayes company factory prototype wheels, wrapped with the factory correct Uniroyal steel belted radials. Turn the key and the 455ci engine roars to life and purrs like a lion. This is a very well preserved treasure.
